Who is a Registered Agent?

A registered agent is an individual who ensures that the corporation has a representative in the state in which the company has been incorporated to receive legal documents. The registered agent is responsible for sending all documents or mail to the corporation's main address. Companies that do not operate in the state in which they were incorporated normally use agent service companies as their registered agent.

It is a law in most states, that a corporation should have a registered agent/ office within the state in which the corporation was incorporated. The address of the registered office does not necessarily have to be the same as the corporation's actual business address. The only stipulation is that the registered agent's address cannot be a P.O. Box address. The agent should have a valid street address. The main responsibility of the registered agent is to receive and forward important legal documents for the corporation and to notify the corporation of legal service of process.
